Our current Digital Resident Jaron Hill presents The Cuckmere Totem, a research project that develops ideas around the concept that the body = home. Jaron has worked collaboratively with artist and fashion designer Jawara Alleyne, to create a number of experimental totemic structures.

Don't forget to check out the updates from our previous Digital Residents Kim Coleman and Jenny Hogarth and our Micro-Commission artists Sam Williams and Moa Johansson and an*dre neely.

In addition to our PRAXIS programme, we've selected two artists from last year's cohort and awarded them each with a micro-commission as part of our commitment to support graduates. The selected artists are Kinnari Saraiya and Katie Unwin.

We're pleased to welcome our new Administrator Emma Copley to the Axis team!

Emma says, "I am a working artist and Axis member, with a demonstrated history of working in the creative industries and arts education. Over the past twenty years I have built and maintained a successful artist’s practice while compiling a broad base of experience in administration, planning and delivery of arts-based education, and exhibition organisation. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Rhode Island School of Design with Honours, and a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from Cambridge School of Art with Distinction. Throughout my history of working as an artist I have completed work for commission, advertising and publication and recently was awarded a grant to complete a painting installation 24 Portraits: Recovering and Reimagining Women’s Labour at the University of Cambridge as part of The Rising Tide: Women at Cambridge programme of events.

I am delighted to have joined the Axis team where I can utilise my education and work experience in order to provide effective administrative support for the charity and its current projects including; Social ARTery, Social Art Library, Vacant Spaces, and the Social Art Network, the membership scheme, marketing and communications."

In response to our Digital Resident Jaron Hill we’ve selected five artists for Five2Watch who have explored portraiture within their work: Martin Seeds, Roy Mehta, Ingrid Berthon-Moine, John Paul Evans and Ernesto Romano.

Leading UK contemporary visual arts institutions and art schools unite against proposed government cuts to arts education.

An Open Letter to Secretary of Education, Gavin Williamson, facilitated by CVAN and a Visual Arts Alliance, has gained over 300 signatories to demonstrate an opposition to the proposed cuts.

The Government has proposed that courses in price group C1 – covering subjects in music, dance, drama and performing arts; art and design; media studies; and archaeology – are not among its strategic priorities and will be subject to funding reductions. The proposed reduction of £121.40 per student represents a funding cut of 50 percent in the subsidy to these specialist subjects that are expensive to teach. The visual arts sector strongly disagrees with this proposal and furthermore, alongside the London Art School Alliance, opposes the removal of the London weighting.

300 leaders from across the visual arts sector including art institutions, art schools, galleries and universities across the country, have come together to issue an open letter to Gavin Williamson, the Secretary of State for Education asking him to revoke his proposed 50% cuts in subsidy support to arts subjects across higher education.
