I often work in batches of small paintings around 15-20 works in each batch on board or paper. Study (Black, Purple, Yellow) is one of a series created in the studio in 2022 after a period of working on some large scale canvases. The variation of marks in the painting are in relation to the other works in the series. I am interested in materials and how they go together, and the starting point for this work was the look of a discarded palette where colours had been wiped over primer with thicker paint, ridges, and paint washes over the top. I was interested to keep a bit of this look in the painting but at the same time keep it from looking like it's set out as an idea. Rafael, Rembrandt and other 16th/17th C artists are an influence in my work.
